George W. Flinn October 16, 1925 – October 13, 2013
George W. Flinn passed away on October 13, 2013 at the Topeka V.A. Hospital from complications of brain cancer. Memorial Services will be held at Mount Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St., at 1:00 p.m. on October 25, 2013.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, his parents, Dr. George W. and Grace Flinn, and his brother, Dr. Don Ell Flinn. He is survived by his brother Rob Roy Flinn; son Larry Flinn and Marilyn Flinn; grandchildren Larry, Shawna, Jeff and Pam Mesler, and great-grandchildren Haley, Montana, Brandon and Jessica. He is also survived by his daughter Nancy Flinn Mangen and Richard Mangen; and grandchildren Adrienne Flinn O’Hayre and Ryan O’Hayre, and Whitney Flinn Mangen.
George was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and grew up in Joplin, Missouri. He joined the Merchant Marines during WWII and made numerous trips overseas supplying our troops with fuel, food and ammunition. He was a devoted son and wrote copious postcards and letters to his parents. After the war he settled in Topeka, training at The Menninger Foundation to become a psychiatric attendant. During this training he met and married Gertrude L. Young. Subsequently, George worked at the Topeka Fire Department for 27 years and retired in 1979. George and Gertrude enjoyed retired life. He loved golf, boating, fishing, camping, dancing and generally having a good time.
