The above picture, provided by the Graham County Sheriff’s Department shows the result of a fire at mid-afternoon on Monday, July 22, at the Carl and Julie Davis home, northeast of Hill City on W Road. Reported at 2:48 p.m., the fire followed an earlier grass fire reported south of Damar, which resulted in Graham County fire units being returned from their mutual aid assistance in Rooks County to fight a building fire which kept them on the scene for nearly six hours.
A large Quonset building, just north of the family’s home, and adjacent to a number of chemical tanks, was believed to have been set on fire by lightning as a thunderstorm was reported just north of the Davis farm at the time.
Julie Davis and a son, Arik, were present at the home when the fire started, or the situation could have been even more serious. The building was rated as a total loss, as were its contents, which included five vehicles, but nearby buildings and equipment were saved because of the firefighters’ efforts.
Sheriff Cole Presley noted that the firemen would not have been nearly as successful as they were without the help of the following, who continually hauled water to the scene: Billips Farms, Keiswetter Farms, Crop Production Service, Belleau Brothers, Brad Keith, and the Graham County Highway Department. “The service that these folks provided was critical to our effort,” said Sheriff Presley. “A big hat’s off to our Graham County Fire Department!,” said the official.
Some of the loss is expected to be covered by insurance.
