Four houses in the neighborhood of 82nd Avenue and Cottontail Drive were briefly threatened Tuesday afternoon when a blown fuse on an electric line sparked a grass fire.
Units from Hutchinson Fire Department and Reno Joint District No. 2 responded to the fire, according to Deputy Chief Mike Miller.
“Approximately 20 acres of brush was on fire,” Miller said.
But, by 4:30 p.m. the crews had left the scene, after the fire was under control.
A tree fell into the power line, causing it to short out and for a fuse to blow, which created sparks and caught the grass on fire.
“Winds were gusting 27 to 28 mph spreading the fire very quickly,” said Battalion Chief Doug Hanen.
Holly Thomas, who lives at the corner of 82nd Avenue, was at work at the time. But, as the fire spread to her tree row, a neighbor let her little rat terrier, Rocky, out of his pen, which was about 10 feet from the fire.
Then they called to let her know about the fire. She got the message about 2:40 p.m., and hurried to the scene.
“I got there after they got it calmed down,” Thomas said. “It looked close,”
Ten fire units from Hutchinson and three from Buhler fought the blaze, according to Miller.
“It can be frightening with all the wind,” Thomas said.
