The two views above show some of the results of a fire which ranged over three days earlier last month in the area south of Bogue and particularly at the Wildhorse Township Cemetery, which is located one mile south of the eastern Graham County community.
A fire, which was believed to have possibly been started by hot bearings on a piece of equipment, started in a field adjacent to the cemetery and spread to the cemetery, burning trees and shrubs, along with the roof on the cemetery directory structure. Also burned was an area north of the cemetery.
According to Graham County Fire Chief Mickie Helberg, the fire was first called in at 1:22 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, with firefighting units also called back to the scene on Sunday and Monday, September 8 and 9. In addition to Graham County Fire Department units from Bogue and Hill City, mutual aid units from Rooks County, including those in Damar and Palco, also responded.
“We really appreciated the assistance and good work of all the fire departments, along with the assistance from area farmers who hauled water to the scene and also helped by disking the area around the fire,” said Chief Helberg. The damage in the cemetery was basically limited to vegetation and the one small structure.
