Firefighters extinguished a small fire in the attic of a residence at 1019 Exchange St. Tuesday afternoon.
The house is rented by Caleb Eccles, who said he noticed smoke coming from the attic when he returned home from work. He called 911 immediately and was not injured, he said.
No one else was occupying the residence at the time of the fire, and the cause was not determined but was thought to have originated in attic insulation, said Battalion Chief Steve Kuhlmann. Firefighters took the insulation outside to soak it down with water.
Kuhlmann said attic fires are difficult to fight because it is difficult to get a crew and hose line in the attic with little room to move around.
The 1000 block of Exchange street was blocked to traffic. Emporia State University police, Emporia Police Department, fire and EMS responded to the scene.
Ken Tanner, the owner of the house, said he recently put a new furnace and heating in the residence.
