Smoke drifted across US-54 and 295th Street West creating a traffic hazard for motorists in western Sedgwick County.
About 60-acres of wheat field stubble caught fire about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday afternoon near Garden Plain. Sedgwick County Division Fire Chief Eddie Fajardo told KFDI News the fire was brought under control in about 20-minutes and overhaul lasted another 45-minutes to complete.
There was also some concern about low grade explosives kept in a steel trailer in the area. The flames came within 15-feet of the trailer. Fajardo said there wasn’t enough to fuel the flames to ignite the explosives that are used to place utility power poles in the ground.
Sedgwick County Sheriff Deputies and Highway Patrol Troopers were called to the scene to direct traffic early on due to the amount of smoke blowing across the highway. No one was injured.
