Did you miss your chance to battle neuromuscular disease last weekend? Volunteers from Mulvane Fire Rescue stood on street corners at two locations—at K-15 and Rock Rd and at First and Main—boots in hand, looking for donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The annual Fill the Boot campaign for MDA “went pretty good,” according to Mulvane Fire Rescue Training and Safety Lt. Jason Mundell. “We raised around $3,600 over the weekend. We’re going to try to do something more during Old Settlers.”
There were 17 firefighters and volunteers helping on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11, and if the weather permits they’ll do it again after the Old Settlers parade on Saturday, August 17, at the corner of First and Main. The boots will only be out for about an hour on Saturday. Lt. Mundell promised to have final figures available after the weekend.
Fire departments around the country have partnered with the MDA since 1954 to help fight muscular dystrophy. Funds raised for “Fill the Boot” go towards the MDA’s summer camp for children, research initiatives, local clinics and support groups and children and adults in the area affected by the disease. The Mulvane’s fire department’s goal was $2,500 this year.
