The Little River Fire Department is the owner of a new tanker fire truck. The truck came from the United States Forestry Service. The Fire Department received a $25,000 grant from the Little River Community Fund for fire truck improvements.
The grant paid most of the equipment on the truck. The truck was renovated at the Ellsworth Prison. The cost at the prison was for materials only, not for labor. At the prison all of the equipment was installed and the truck was painted. The paint scheme for the truck is red camouflage. The work done included all of the electrical work, interior and exterior paint, new seat covers, metal trim stating Little River Fire Department which was cut with a laser, also a fire department symbol made of metal and cut with a laser was added to the truck.
Among other things, the truck is equipped with a remote control pump on the front which can be operated from inside of the truck to shoot water on a fire (a great safety feature), a hose on a reel for firefighting, and a portable tank in which firemen can dump the whole tank of water, approximately 1200 gallons of water. This is used when other fire trucks are present and keeps a supply of water available, especially helpful when fighting a grass fire.
The truck can be used in the city of Little River and also in the county to fight fires. The fire department has not needed the truck for a fire yet but the firefighters have been training on the truck.
The Little River Fire Department is also raising funds to help pay for the cost of renovating the truck. They have scheduled a Hog Roast for Sunday, October 13, at the Holy Trinity Parish Hall. The public is invited to attend. A free will donation will be taken. Along with the Hog Roast they are holding a Gun Raffle. Tickets are currently available and can be purchased from any firefighter, one ticket for $20 and three tickets for $50. There are seven guns in the raffle. The winners will be announced at the Hog Roast on October 13.
