Monday morning the Esbon community celebrated the final completion of the newly constructed Esbon Rural Fire House with an open house. Among those on hand at the ceremony were Jewell County Commissioners Dwight Frost and Mark Fleming, Joe Pashia, Esbon mayor and project manager, presented several certificates of appreciation to individuals who helped him complete the facility in the extended designated time: Jerry Benjamin, Don Fogo, Doug Hancock, the Mizner family, Randy Fogo, John Frost, Dennis and Daphne Manning and Charlie Fischer.
The fire house has four bays with doors on the north and south side of the building so the trucks can go out and in both sides of the facility. In the bay areas there is a drain system in the middle of the floor for drainage. Each bay has water brought to the area by plumbing mounted in the ceiling which will allow for all cleaning of the trucks and filling of the trucks from inside the facility.
The Esbon Rural Fire District also now has a portable control burn unit that can be slid onto an individual’s truck bed. The facility will house six trucks as well as provide ample room for all maintenance on the trucks. Just off the main bay area is a laundry room facility. Above the office and bathrooms is an extra storage area.
The front door to the fire house gives access to the meeting room which is also fitted with a refrigerator, stove and microwave donated by JP Electric. To the south of this room is an office. To the north are two restrooms that are both handicap accessible and both have handicap showers. On the east side of the building which is facing the main street of Esbon, there are three stained glass windows that were made and donated to the fire house by Charlie Fischer.
The Esbon Volunteer Fire Department at the present time has 12 to 15 active firemen. The fire chief is Randy Fogo.
Volunteers donating homemade cookies for the open house were Irma Fogo, Kim Davis, Lesa Peroutek and Beverly Frost.
A grand opening for the fire house is tentatively planned for next Memorial Day weekend.
The construction of the new fire house was made possible by a Kan-Step Grant process which was started in 2010.
