An electrical fire early Tuesday was quickly extinguished by Topeka firefighters, an investigator said.
Fire investigator Michael Martin said crews were dispatched about 12:38 a.m. on a report of a fire in the basement of a single-family residence at 1111 S.W. Horne. Crews arriving first at the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the home’s south side.
Initial reports indicated the home’s occupant had evacuated before firefighters arrived, but rescue crews searched the structure for victims while suppression crews began attacking the flames.
Martin said the fire was quickly extinguished, and the home’s occupant was located safe outside of the building.
The fire originated in the basement’s northwest corner, Martin said, and its cause is being classified as an accidental electrical problem.
He estimated its damage at $15,000 to the structure and $10,000 to its contents.
