The Right Co-op Association has presented the Kiowa County Fire Department with “The Great Wall of Rescue”, a device to assist in the rescue of individuals engulfed in grain.

Grain acts like quicksand and can trap a person quickly once grain gets as high as your knees, and you can’t move enough to get out. With a bushel of wheat weighing 60 pounds and some elevators holding 300,000 bushels, the task of removing someone who is trapped can be a challenge.

The entrapment tool can be pushed in around the trapped person, and then the grain can be removed from inside the tube, freeing the person.

Four members from Mullinville have gone through the training necessary to perform the rescue. A total of ten personnel in the county have gone through the training.

The “Great Wall of Rescue” cost around $3,000.00. Fire Chief Cody Sherer said, that he “hopes that it stands in the corner and never has to be used.”
