The Sedgwick Fire Department is excited to announce that it has received a grant for new equipment that will benefit not only the department but many of Sedgwick’s citizens.
The grant of $2,500 came from FM Global and will be used to purchase a fire extinguisher training system. Not only did the department get the grant to help cover the cost but received a matching donation from W.B. Services of Sedgwick.
Fire Chief Mark Sauerwein said another local business maybe stepping up to making another donation that would pay for the remaining cost of the system.
The system uses water instead of powder for the training and will save the department money. Also a propane unit that provides the fire for the trainings has an automatic emergency shut off for safety. The unit is called a BullEx I.T.S/Extreme.
Sauerwein said they had plans in April to do fire extinguisher training with W.B. Services but weather postponed that event. He said powder for that training would have cost the department $200. With the use water and a small amount of propane, training cost will be minimal, according to Sauerwein.
One of the first trainings with the new equipment will be with W.B. Services. Sauerwein said it was their employees that were to receive the training in April. Sauerwein said when he received the grant he contacted W.B. Services and they matched the grant within 30 minutes of him contacting them.
The new system is expected to be set up at the Sedgwick Fall Festival for demonstrations.
Sauerwein said they will be able to have training and demonstrations for many groups in town such as schools, church groups, senior groups and other civic groups.
