Semitrailer destroyed by fire after Friday wreck

A semitrailer was destroyed after it caught on fire after a Friday crash 9 miles southeast of Abilene.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, a semi driven by Mark Kenneth Hitzfield, 53, of Ogden, was westbound on 1400 Avenue, southeast of Abilene, when he lost control of the semi for an unknown reason at about 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The semi rolled and came to rest on its top in the north ditch, where it was completely destroyed by fire, the report said.

Hitzfield was taken to Abilene Memorial Hospital with injuries. He was not listed as a patient Saturday, according to a hospital spokesperson.
