The Kansas Firefighters Museum and McConnell Air Force Base will conduct observances Wednesday of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Visitors to the museum are encouraged to arrive at 1300 S. Broadway between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. in order for the commemoration service to coincide with the actual time of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast 12 years ago.
The hour-long service will include a posting of the colors by students from Hamilton Middle School ROTC and songs from South High Madrigals. Afterward, doves will be released.
At McConnell, a ceremony will start at 4:30 p.m. to honor the victims and first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
The event is for personnel on the base. It will take place at the flagpole in front of Building One.
Three formations from the fire and emergency services flight, 22nd Security Forces Squadron and 22nd Medical Group plan to participate. Col. Joel Jackson, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Commander, is scheduled to deliver a short message.
The sounding of the last alarm by Sedgwick County firefighters and a bagpiper will be included in the event.
Other events in Kansas include an observance at 10 a.m. at the Global War on Terrorism monument at Fort Riley. The monument is a replica of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York with a base shaped like the Pentagon. It includes the names of 208 soldiers from Fort Riley who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq since the global war on terror began.
