State and local officials are investigating a fire that destroyed a home in Parsons.
Parsons firefighters were called at 9:18 p.m. Sunday to 2525 Grand.
Firefighters saw flames and smoke through the front of the home and entered it far enough to extinguish the fire. They were called outside as the roof of the building began to sag, Fire Chief Larry Steeby said.
Firefighters ventilated the building to improve visibility before re-entering. The fire was deemed under control at 10:02 p.m., and crews remained on scene until Monday morning to allow investigators time to look over the fire scene.
The cause of the fire is suspicious because there were no utilities to the residence, Steeby said. Community National Bank of Edna owns the home, but no one apparently was living there at the time.
Steeby didn’t know if the home had insurance.
The home, valued at $10,000, is considered a total loss.
Firefighters were assisted by Parsons police, Altamont Fire Department and Labette Health EMS.
The investigation is being handled by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and police.
