Hiawatha firefighters worked Tuesday morning to extinguish a fire at the United Methodist Church.
The fire which spread to a bush at the base of the cross was first noticed by students and teachers of Happy Days Preschool who were attending classes in the basement of the church.
“We had just been talking to the kids about Moses and the burning bush in our bible lesson this week,” said preschool teacher Denise Elfner. “All of a sudden we looked out the window and there it was, a burning bush.”
Firefighters extinguished the fire without incident.
