Clay Center Fire Department said a trailer that caught fire Friday is probably a complete loss, though firefighters were able to save much of the contents, Clay Center Fire Chief John Ihnen said.
“With a trailer you have seven minutes and they’re gone,” Ihnen said. “(That we were able to save anything) is a testament to what we do.”
The trailer on lot No. 10 at Countryside Gardens, 310 12 St., belongs to Dee McVaugh, who lives there with one other occupant. At the time of the fire, there was no one inside.
There were no injuries, and no pets lost. A dog that was in a pen outside is fine, and a cat that was inside jumped out when fire fighters opened a window for ventilation, Ihnen said.
While firefighters can’t say for certain how the fire started, they traced the point of origin to around an outside power outlet that a doghouse heating pad was plugged into.
“We cannot eliminate that as a cause,” Ihnen said “We didn’t find any other (possible cause).”
Clay Center city and Clay Center rural (Hayes) firefighters responded to the fire at 1:11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15. Clay County Center Emergency Medical Services and Clay Center Police and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department also responded.
The fire destroyed the living room and most of the kitchen. Because of the structure damage, the trailer is a complete loss, Ihnen said.
Kitchen appliances and other miscellaneous items were also lost.
However, firefighters were able to save the washer and dryer, the bedroom and its contents, a computer, and other contents.
