Fire trucks, ambulances and emergency responders in full gear were on site at the BNSF rail yard in Newton Monday morning. However, there wasn’t an actual emergency–Newton Fire/EMS personnel were putting on a training exercise, practicing how to respond to a train-related emergency.

Newton crews worked with a partially overturned vehicle next to a train and also carried a mock “patient” off a train.

Newton Fire/EMS works with BNSF to put on a training session about once a year, officials said.

Both Newton Fire/EMS and BNSF also are represented on the Local Emergency Planning Committee, a county-wide group with members from Fire/EMS, health care, law enforcement, emergency management and more. The group plans how to respond to emergencies such as a disease outbreak or a hazmat incident.
