Trustees approve new equipment purchases

The Coffey County Fire District No. 1 Board of Trustees approved the purchase of new 800 MHz radios and new chairs for the LeRoy Fire Station when it met in regular session August 19. The board also discussed a new slide-in unit recently purchased for a truck at the Lebo Fire Station and the status of a new brush truck being built for the Waverly Fire Station.
Chief Brown reported new 800 MHz radios have been purchased at a cost of $9,321.50. He said the district still needs to purchase a new mobile radio to be installed in the new brush rig being built for Station 7, Waverly. Following discussion, the board approved the purchase of a mobile 800 MHz radio for the brush rig.
Chief Brown informed the board that Station 5, LeRoy, is in need of new station chairs. Station Chief Jim Luney said the old chairs were purchased at an auction at Wolf Creek Generating Station several years ago and are no longer OSHA compliant. Following discussion, the board voted to purchase 25 chairs.
A new slide-in unit for Station 6, Lebo, has been delivered and is installed. Station Chief John Jarvis said the truck would be back in service by August 20.
Chief Brown, Waverly Chief Steve McCurry and Gridley Chief Lance Rodgers attended a pre-build meeting August 26 for the new brush truck for Station 7, Waverly. Chief Brown said everything is on schedule and only a few minor adjustments had to be made. Chief Brown said the mid-point inspection should occur mid-September.
There were 51 alarms during June, which included 1 building fire, 1 brush fire, 6 grass fires, 1 outside rubbish fire, 21 medical assists, 13 motor vehicle accidents, 1 motor vehicle/pedestrian accident, 1 call to assist police, 1 call that was cancelled en route and 1 false alarm.
There were 51 alarms during July, which included 1 fire—other, 3 building fires, 7 grass fires, 24 medical assists, 5 motor vehicle accidents with injuries, 1 hazardous condition, 1 gas leak, 1 power line down, 1 public service, 2 standbys and three calls that were cancelled en route. There have been 260 alarms so far in 2013.
Following a 15-minute executive session to discuss personnel matters of nonelected personnel, with Chief Brown present, the board voted to waive the residence guideline and allow Shannon Moore, who lives in Woodson County to participate on the Water Rescue Division. The motion was made of the recommendation of Water Rescue Leader Ken Roney and Chief Brown. The residence guideline requires personnel to live in Coffey County.
Since Chief Randall Brown will be at the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) training for two weeks in September, the board cancelled its regular meeting for September, unless something major arises.
