Two people were killed shortly after 8 a.m. Friday morning in a two-vehicle accident on East U.S. 54 at a highway construction crossover just east of 70th Avenue.
An eastbound four-door pickup, with Texas license plates, hit a Caterpillar water tanker as it crossed the highway northbound. A flag crew was present at the scene at the time of the accident.
Two passengers in the pickup were killed in the collision, said Mark McManaman, Pratt County administrator of Emergency and Medical Services.
Pratt County EMS transported a third passenger to Pratt Regional Medical Center where an EagleMed helicopter transferred the passenger to a Wichita hospital.
The driver of the pickup suffered only very minor injuries and was not transported. Pratt County EMS also transported the driver of the water tanker to Pratt Regional Medical Center.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is working the accident. A KHP CHART team has been called to investigate. Traffic on U.S. 54 will be rerouted around the accident site for several hours, McManaman said.
