Firefighters battled a 3-alarm blaze at an apartment building located at 5604 Floyd Street on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was reported just after noon. Heavy black smoke and flames were seen shooting from the building as firefighters tried to put the fire out.
One person suffered critical injuries and was taken to KU Med for treatment of their burns, firefighters told KMBC’s Haley Harrison. An Overland Park Police officer was also taken to a hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.
Firefighters said at least six people, in all, were treated for smoke inhalation.
As many as 30 units in the three-story building were affected by the fire, Harrison reported.
The fire was upgraded from a 2-alarm to a 3-alarm fire at 12:45 p.m. It took about two hours to get under control, an Overland Park Fire Department spokesman said.
The apartments are just off of Metcalf near Interstate 35 and Interstate 635.
Residents reported hearing some sort of explosion before the fire, and investigators are now trying to determine the cause.
