Below is the message from the Board of Director’s for Jefferson County Rural Water District # 13.
Governor Brownback has requested disaster declarations for 37 additional drought counties including Douglas, Jefferson and Leavenworth County as of July 20, 2012. Although the RWD#13 plant is keeping up with the large increase in demand for water, we are asking everyone to be mindful of their water-usage practices and to make voluntary water conservation efforts to limit or eliminate non-essential water usage.
As drought conditions continue, voluntary conservation measures will become even more critical. Just cutting back on typical warm weather activities such as watering lawns and plants, filling swimming pools and washing cars can make a difference.
There are simple things everyone can do to conserve water, including:
- Avoid washing your car at home with a hose
- Cut back on filling swimming pools
- Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks
- Shut off fountains, the evaporation creates more water loss
- Avoid watering lawns. If you do, water lawns and gardens sparingly in the morning or evening to prevent excessive evaporation
- Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants
- Fix all leaky plumbing fixtures, including outdoor hoses
- Take shorter showers
- Minimize use of kitchen sink garbage disposal units
- Run washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads
