Mesoscale Discussion 0110
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

Areas affected...New England into western Maine

Concerning...Freezing rain

Valid 260618Z - 261115Z

SUMMARY...Freezing rain accumulations appear likely across portions
of New England and into western Maine as precipitation transitions
from snow to rain through the overnight hours.

DISCUSSION...Recent surface observations and MPING reports from
across far eastern NY and southwest VT show snow transitioning to a
mix of winter precipitation and freezing rain amid strong warm
advection in the 850-700 mb layer. Recent ASOS observations from
eastern NY reported freezing rain accumulations of 0.17 inches with
this activity, which is expected to spread northeast in tandem with
the synoptic warm frontal zone. Strong isentropic ascent and
moisture flux over the warm front, combined with warming mid-level
temperatures, should yield approximately 1-3 hours of freezing rain
with accumulations around 0.1 inch possible. The duration of
freezing rain (and the magnitude of accumulations) will be dependent
on how quickly the surface freezing line can lift north into the
region during the 8-11 UTC period.
