Five people are safe after a house fire in Lawrence on 20th Street between Maine and Alabama Streets.

Lawrence-Douglas County fire units responded to a structure fire Wednesday just after 11:30 a.m. at 1013 West 20th Street. When units arrived, flames were
coming from the south side of the home. Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire a short time later.

During the response, Alabama Street was closed but has since been re-opened. Utility companies were called to the structure to shut off utilities to the
home.

Fire officials said there were five occupants in the home at the time of the fire. The official said Red Cross has stepped in to help the residents.

As a result of the fire response, a water main broke near 20th and Maine Streets causing road closures.
