“Big Truck Night” was a hit for Parents as Teachers, Thursday, October 17. The weather cooperated and the crowd of over 100 children and adults were all smiles at the large assortment of vehicles to explore.

The fire trucks appeared to be the biggest attraction with a constant stream of children and adults waiting to climb in, with the police cars with their flashing lights being the second choice.

Children could also climb into a bucket truck, ambulance, school bus, tractor and City of Mulvane work vehicles. The military Humvee was a new vehicle added this year. Approximately 15 vehicles were present to be viewed and investigated in the parking lot of Munson Primary Grade School.

PAT coordinator Debbie White and volunteers had many things for children to do. The Derby Fire Department smoke house was available for the first time at this event. Children and adults could experience what it’s like when there is smoke in a room and how to get out safely. Equipment used by the fire department was able to be picked up and tried on and there were inflatable play areas in the gym.

The evening included a potluck dinner, with the Mulvane Optimist providing the hot dogs and the cooks to grill them. “The food was so popular, that we had to run and get more hot dogs midway through the evening,” White said. Families were encouraged to bring a side dish or dessert, with the utensils, plates and drinks provided by PAT.

The first hour, from 5 to 6 p.m., was “No Sirens Or Horns” time for children who would be frightened by them.

During the second hour, from 6 to 7 p.m., the horns were able to be honked and the sirens blown.

The Mulvane Fire Department, Mulvane Emergency Medical Services, Mulvane Police Department, City of Mulvane and Unified School District 263 employees were all volunteers at the event and according to White, they couldn’t have done it without them.

The event had previously been held in the summer, but because of the school construction, was put off until this fall. “Look for another ‘Big Truck Night’ around June of next year, if you missed this one,” said White.
