A Gorham man remains in serious condition in a Wichita hospital after being involved in a vehicle wreck and fire Saturday morning on the Ellis/Russell County line.

According to the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Christopher Lee Weigel of Gorham was traveling south on Ellis County’s 400th Ave, which is also Russell County’s 175th Ave, swerving in the roadway. Just north of the Airbase Road/Balta Road intersection, Weigel’s 1998 Chevy S-10 pickup entered the west ditch and became stuck.

Ellis County authorities say alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the wreck and that Weigel was passed out in the vehicle when it started on fire. Weigel then awoke and was able to exit the vehicle under his own power, but sustained substantial injury to his legs, hands and arms.

Weigel was transported by Ellis County EMS to Walker where he was air lifted via Eagle Med to the St. Francis Burn Center in Wichita. According to hospital officials Monday morning, Weigel remains in serious condition.

The pickup was destroyed and towed from the scene.

The incident occurred at about 7 AM Saturday.

Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputies, Ellis County EMS, Russell County Sheriff’s Deputies, Russell County EMS and the Gorham Fire Department responded to the wreck.
