Rush County Fire District #4 hosted The University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute’s Grain Engulfment Rescue Class in La Crosse on September 18-19. Thirty firefighters and grain elevator personnel from the area attended including firefighters from La Crosse, Liebenthal, Otis, Rush Center, Alexander and McCracken as well as employees from Midland Marketing and Bazine Co-op.

The 8-hour class was taught by KU Instructor Ed Morrison and featured a Power Point presentation with lots of videos and a lot of hands-on training. Midland Marketing of La Crosse furnished the grain that was used. KU has a large semi trailer that is set up for this kind of training with an actual grain bin, augers and rescue tools incorporated into it. “Victims” were actually placed in grain in two separate bins on the trailer. Grain was augered between the bins to simulate an engulfment and rescuers actually used the latest techniques to rescue the victims under the close supervision of the KU Fire and Rescue Institute instructors.

The class covered safety precautions to use when working in and around grain bins and elevators as well as rescue tools and techniques when things go wrong. It also covered some ideas on who to contact for further assistance if such an incident happens. It gives emergency responders some experience in handling the emergency as well as resources to call for additional support.
