High winds fan flames

Fire destroyed hundreds of bales of hay about one and a half miles east of Cairo and a mile north. Spontaneous combustion is the probable cause of the fire that burned several rows of bales then jumped a dirt row and set fire to some dead trees in a grove of trees and had some CRP burning before firefighters arrived and got the CRP out. Had the fire gotten going it would have had hundreds of acres of CRP to burn.

This is the second fire Monday. A small grass fire on the west side of the skating rink burned a small portion of grass. City firefighters quickly had the fire out. Wind blowing tree limbs on a power line is the possible cause of that fire.

A fire Sunday in northwest Pratt County destroyed a long row of large square bales. Spontaneous combustion is also the likely cause of that fire.
