A one-story home in the city’s Seabrook neighborhood caught fire at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, causing substantial damage to the residence.

One occupant, a man, was inside the home at the time of the fire and was able to escape without any injuries.

First arriving crews found flames and smoke coming from the front room of the home, which is located at 1938 S.W. McAllister.

Topeka fire Battalion Chief Ron Hufford said the crews were able to knock down the fire fairly quickly, although the firefighters were kept at bay at first because of the intensity of the flames.

A cat that was inside the home was rescued. It took off running to the north and hadn’t been located as of noon.

One of the home’s residents is Isla Vogel, 91, who was getting off work at the Baker’s Dozen doughnut shop at S.W. 21st and McAllister when fire engines raced by the business. Vogel said she saw the fire trucks going by and began walking home to see what was going on. She found her house on fire.

Housing arrangements were being made for the home’s occupants, who are Vogel and her adult son.

Fire investigators are on the scene to investigate. No injuries were reported.
