The Kiowa County EMS has won a national award, just six years after a tornado wiped out their building and equipment.

Back in 2007, the Greensburg station was left with only one ambulance and a trailer for the volunteers to sleep in.

With grant money, the Kiowa County EMS has rebuilt, expanding to three ambulances and three full-time employees who now do community education programs.

This has earned the Greensburg team the “Impact Volunteer EMS Service of the Year” award.

Kiowa County EMT, Kaylan Jones, attributes their success to teamwork and hard work.

“We have volunteers who will get up at two o’clock in the morning and take a transfer to Wichita and come home, shower and be at their regular job at 8 am and work a full day’s work at their other job,” said Jones.

Their teamwork has helped Kiowa County EMS win a total of eight awards in the last two years.
