Three applications have been made in Cherokee County for grant funding from the Economic Development fund created in the 2014 county budget.

The commissioners have not yet set the criteria for the applications but that has not stopped the communities from making applications.

The City of Weir has asked for funding to help build a community storm shelter. The first request was submitted in April.

“Our goal is to install one shelter (10′ by 20′) which would hold 40 people in each ward.

The three units would be above ground with air vents.

The shelters would be for use of those residents without a safe place to go. The cost would be $27,000 each or a total of $81,000 according to Mayor Sandra Stricklin’s request to the county for help with the funding.

Another request submitted by Weir in October sought help in funding a new library building.

“Our current library building is in grave disrepair and we have been looking into alternative ideas for over six years in an attempt to get grant funding and or figure out a way to build our own new building,” said Amy Zortz, Weir City Clerk.

The recently established Lola Township Fire District has requested financial help to acquire facilities, trucks, bunker gear and etc. necessary for providing fire protection for the citizens of the Township.

“We are currently working with local banks seeking funding for a facility, however, we will need to equip the facility with the required trucks and gear for providing firefighting services,” said the letter from Jay Justice, chairman of the Lola Township Fire Department. “We are requesting $25,000 to help with the initial costs for the department. This funding will be used to purchase and/or lease basic firefighting equipment.”

The commissioners are waiting for the actual application forms to be completed before officially accepting any grant requests.
