At 5:12 p.m. on Sunday, Butler County Sheriff Deputies, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, Leon Police Department, Butler County EMS and Butler County Fire Department responded to the report of an injury accident involving a motorcycle in the 400 block of Southeast Highway 400.
Upon the arrival of emergency responders, it was discovered the operator of the motorcycle had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the report.
Investigators at the scene learned Rodney W. Hamilton of Peck was driving his 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix eastbound on Highway 400 when he came upon a 1999 Chrysler Cirrus stopped in the roadway waiting on traffic to clear to negotiate a northbound turn. In an effort to avoid a collision with the stopped vehicle, Hamilton veered off the roadway to the south, causing him to lose control striking a delineator post. As he attempted to regain control of his vehicle, it reentered the highway and crossed into the westbound lanes where it collided with a westbound motorcycle operated by David A. Scheideman of Wichita.
During the collision, Scheideman was thrown from the motorcycle into the north ditch where he died from his injuries. Both the Honda and the Pontiac came to a final stop also in the north ditch. Hamilton suffered no injuries in the accident.
