Fire destroyed several large bales of hay and equipment that was inside a barn that caught fire from an ATV that had just been parked just east of Uniontown Wednesday.

Rural Fire District 3 responded to a barn fire on at 4:30 p.m. at 798 Hwy. 54.

Fire Chief Delwin Mumbower said 18 personnel from Hiatville, Devon, Uniontown, Bronson, Mapleton and Fulton fire departments responded to the fire.

“District 3 then called Scott Township for assistance. We saw we were going to need additional water supply,” Mumbower said. Four personnel from Scott Township responded.

“An employee was on an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) and parked in the barn. As he got off he noticed a fire under the seat. He went to get a water hose to try to put it out and it got out of control,” Mumbower said.

Steve Shepherd is the owner of the property, and the loss was thought be two skid loaders, 100 large bales of hay, one truck, multiple ATVs and horse tack, Mumbower said.

“We were able to stop the fire before it got his corral and holding pins. The north end (of the barn) remains intact,” Mumbower said.

Firefighters remained on the scene Thursday.

“We had guys set at the site all night and today to make sure it doesn’t spread,” Mumbower said Thursday.
