Work is progressing on a new 50 x 104′ fire station in downtown Scandia, a joint project of the city and rural fire departments. Mayor and fire department member Gary Cline said the $300,000 project will include six bays and an educational room with a generator that can be used as a shelter or coordinating space in emergencies. The departments opted to fund the project through bonds rather than seek grant funds. Cline said that doing the project with the city as the general contractor allows up to 80 percent of the labor and materials to be provided by local contractors and businesses. Photo by Maria Wilson.
