A 37-year-old Hutchinson man who had just displayed his 1996 Z28 Chevrolet Camaro at the Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run & Classic Car Show was T-boned Sunday afternoon on Main Street after another vehicle reportedly ran a red light.
Hutchinson firefighters worked for several minutes to free Jeffery Roberts from his red Camaro, and Roberts was placed on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman on Sunday said she could not release Roberts’ condition.
About 3:30 p.m., Roberts was northbound on Main Street in the outside lane when his Camaro was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe, which was being driven eastbound on Fourth Avenue by 23-year-old Hutchinson resident Cassie Brown, Hutchinson Police Sgt. Kris Sims reported.
Sims said witnesses reported Brown ran the red light. Brown, who was not injured, was distraught following the accident.
Hutchinson resident B.J. Janzen said she was northbound on Main next to Roberts when the accident occurred. She was preparing to turn left on Fourth Avenue and thinks her vehicle would have been hit had she not stopped first to yield to an oncoming car.
“He got the green light and went straight, and he got hit,” Janzen said of Roberts. “He was unconscious when we got to the car.
“He was coming from the car show – we all were – and his dad was following several cars behind.”
Police directed traffic as the intersection was briefly closed, and several classic cars could be seen driving northbound on Main as they left the car show. Main Street was blocked off from Third Avenue south to Avenue B amid the show, which ran Friday through Sunday afternoon.
