A Hutchinson father and his two young sons were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after their SUV struck a bridge south of Buhler and rolled several times, according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 4:15 p.m., Charles Lee Witt, 39, was traveling north on Buhler Road, just north of 56th Avenue, when his 1998 GMC Suburban hit the concrete bridge and its guardrail. Then the SUV rolled into a dry creek bed on the west side of the road and struck a wooden fence.
The guardrail could be seen hanging out of the back window of the vehicle, and a tire was found in the opposite ditch.
Witt, who was briefly trapped in the SUV, and his two sons, 9-year-old Tristen and 6-year-old Garrison, were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries, the sheriff’s office reported. All were wearing seat belts.
Tristen was transferred to a Via Christi hospital in Wichita, where he was in good condition Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said. The other two were treated and released.
At the scene, Reno County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lance Smith said he did not think the three were hit by the guardrail, however.
“I don’t think they would have made it” if the guardrail had hit them, he said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Buhler Road between 56th and 69th avenues was temporarily blocked while emergency personnel worked the accident. Buhler Fire and EMS were called to the scene, and the Buhler Police Department also responded.
