Sabetha Fire Chief Jim Johnson reported that at 7:24 p.m. Monday, November 11, the Sabetha Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 2089 120th Road near Woodlawn.

A neighbor, Greg Boltz, was driving home when he saw smoke coming out of the roofline and the eaves at the residence of Paul and Ilene Huffman, and he immediately called 911.

For close to six and a half hours, the firefighters battled the fire, which spread to both the basement and the upstairs, but they were unable to save the structure.

The house burned to the ground and is a total loss, Johnson said. The firefighters were on scene until 1:48 a.m. Tuesday, November 12.

The Wetmore and Goff fire departments also assisted and provided additional water to help fight the flames.

Sabetha Emergency Medical Services personnel also were at the scene, on standby, as is routine in such an event. No injuries occurred.

The Sabetha Fire Department had five trucks and 14 firefighters at the scene. The Wetmore Fire Department brought three trucks and six firefighters, and the Goff Fire Department brought one large tanker and four firefighters.

“I appreciate the firefighters, EMS and the mutual aid from Wetmore and Goff,” Johnson said.

No monetary value of the loss has been determined pending investigation by the insurance company’s fire inspector, who was on the scene Wednesday, November 13.
