Silver Lake man killed in riding mower accident

Topeka Capital Journal – October 8, 2013

A Silver Lake man was found dead late Monday after an apparent accident with a riding mower, a Shawnee County sheriff’s official said.

The sheriff’s office responded about 9:50 p.m. to an address north of Silver Lake on a report of a missing person, said Lt. Jay Simecka.

Sheriff’s deputies, Silver Lake police and Silver Lake Fire Department personnel were searching for the missing man, who had last been in contact with family members about 1 p.m.

Searchers found the man about 10:15 p.m. near the 7500 block of N.W. Docking Road, Simecka said.

Premilinary investigation indicated the man was the driver of a riding mower that overturned, pinning him beneath the mower.

The man, identified as Bernie M. Menhusen, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Simecka said the cause of death will be investigated further by the Shawnee County Coroner’s Office.
