What began as an idea in 2007, was officially completed Saturday afternoon and the West Mineral city officials held a grand opening of their newly completed fire house, severe weather shelter and community room.

“This entire building was done by volunteers,” said West Mineral Fire Chief Randy Johnson.

There was little doubt of the pride Johnson and Mayor Audrey Miller had in the project.

The original grant for the building was submitted in 2007 but was rejected and the small community had to restart the process.

They tried again in 2008 and received the grant, but some difficulty with the contractor prevented the building from getting started.

“It was just four years ago today we broke ground on this, we had some of the dirt work completed, but the important thing is we did not quit,” said council member Rose Marie Wilson.

“I have a plaque on the wall with everyone’s name who worked on the building, it will be a reminder to everyone that this was a community effort,” said Chief Johnson.

Many of those who worked on the building were at the open house Saturday, as everyone pointed out someone else’s work for recognition.”

The building has a kitchen, enough room for four large fire trucks, a storm shelter that will hold 80 people and an office and community room area in addition to rest rooms.

The building indicates the ability of a community without many resources that can come together and build something like this, said Council person Raymond Poor.
