Mesoscale Discussion 0218

Areas affected...Far North-Central KY...Southern OH

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely

Valid 071020Z - 071215Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent

SUMMARY...A few more damaging wind gusts are possible across far
north-central KY southern OH over the next hour or two.

DISCUSSION...A shallow convective line continues to move quickly
eastward across southwest OH, just ahead of a surface low currently
centered over the IN/OH/KY border intersection. Very strong wind
fields are in place over the region, contributing to fast storm
motion, which was recently estimated at 52 kt. Buoyancy is very
limited across the region, but the large-scale forcing for ascent is
being augmented by the more mesoscale ascent attendant to the
surface low. This is contributing to an area of slightly deeper
convection, which is helping to bring some of stronger winds aloft
to the surface. Recent surface observations at JVY and CVG measured
wind gusts of 38 kt and 48 kt, respectively.

The potential for a few more strong wind gusts will accompany this
line as it continues northeastward across southern OH. However, the
limited buoyancy previously mentioned should limit the overall
coverage of any damaging wind gusts.
