CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

SUMMARY...A SWATH OF FREEZING RAIN ORIENTED FROM NERN NM NEWD INTO
SERN NEB WILL AFFECT PARTS OF THE CNTRL PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON...WITH
RATES GENERALLY BETWEEN 0.05-0.10 INCH PER HR POSSIBLE. A MIXED
P-TYPE OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET MAY OCCUR LATER THIS EVENING AS
COLD AIR CONTINUES TO SPREAD SWD.

DISCUSSION...A FETCH OF RICH MOISTURE ORIENTED SW-NE CONTINUES TO
ADVECT ATOP A POST-FRONTAL AIR MASS ACROSS MUCH OF THE CNTRL PLAINS.
THE COLD FRONT HAS ENTERED THE FAR SRN TX PANHANDLE INTO NWRN OK AND
SERN KS AS OF 20Z...WITH THE SFC FREEZING LINE TRAILING THE COLD
FRONT BY ABOUT 100 NM. FREEZING RAIN SHOULD BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD
AS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO SPREAD SWD...GIVEN A STOUT
WARM-NOSE /7C JUST ABOVE 1 KM AGL/ NOTED IN 12Z OBSERVED SOUNDINGS.
DUAL-POL RADAR DATA FROM KDDC AND KTWX CONFIRM THE MELTING LAYER
ALTITUDE IS OCCURRING AT 2-2.5 KM AGL. RATES OF 0.05-0.1 INCH PER HR
/LOCALLY HIGHER/ CAN BE EXPECTED.

TEMPERATURES SHOULD CONTINUE TO GRADUALLY FALL INTO THE UPPER 20S F
THROUGHOUT THE EVENING...RESULTING IN A DEEPENING OF THE NEAR-SFC
COLD LAYER. THIS COULD EVENTUALLY RESULT IN A MIXED P-TYPE OF SLEET
AND FREEZING RAIN...BUT THE STRENGTH OF THE WARM-LAYER ALOFT SHOULD
PERSIST FOR SEVERAL HRS...SUGGESTING FREEZING RAIN WILL REMAIN THE
PREDOMINANT P-TYPE FOR SEVERAL HRS.
