MD 1470 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 444… FOR CENTRAL KS
Mesoscale Discussion 1470 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0453 PM CDT Thu Aug 10 2017 Areas affected...Central KS Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 444... Valid 102153Z - 102330Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 444 continues. SUMMARY...Severe hail and damaging wind gusts remain possible across central KS for at least the next hour. DISCUSSION...Long-lived supercell currently moving through Rush, Pawnee, and Barton counties continues to show radar signatures consistent with severe hail. Outflow from the late morning/early afternoon storms stabilized much of southwest KS (roughly from Pratt and Medicine Lodge westward) but favorable low-level moisture (i.e. dewpoints in the upper 60s/low 70s) and wind profiles exist downwind of the ongoing supercell. As a result, the downstream airmass is quite favorable for storm persistence. However, recent radar scans the storm has shown a bit more development on its western flank, which could contribute to a more southerly storm motion. If the more southerly storm motion is realized, the storm will interact with new development occurring within the WAA over the outflow in southwest KS more quickly. This interaction and propagation into a less unstable airmass would likely lead to quick storm weakening. A more southeasterly storm motion would lead to longer storm longevity. In either case, severe hail and damaging wing gusts are possible for the at least the next hour across central KS. ..Mosier.. 08/10/2017 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
